Description / Expertise

An important and rare example of a French Directoire period, mahogany and fruitwood, two-part bureau cylindre with a commode lower section and an armoire resting on top. The armoire opens with two slatted shutters (tambour), inlaid alternatively with bands of mahogany, blackened and yellow-tinted wood. The interior of the shutters is lined with fabric which enables the tambour to slide easily. Two blackened wood columns with gilt bronze capitals and bases accentuate each side of the armoire.
The desk opens with a roll top and reveals a sliding leather-topped writing surface, two large compartments, and small drawers. The sides are beautifully carved with palm leaves and flowing floral garlands.
The lower part, or the commode, opens with four drawers on three levels. Each corner has an excellent carving of an Egyptian head atop blackened wood columns with gilded bronze capitals. The piece rests on four turned feet of blackened wood. There are brass moldings and handles as well as excellent quality brass escutcheons.
